Carl D. Bradley Mayday Message Went down on November 18, 1958 at 5:28 pm. Frank Sager on duty at WLC at 5:26 p.m. and passed a routine message to First Mate Elmer Fleming on the Carl D. Bradley from the dispatcher at Calcite. Fleming acknowledged the message and said nothing of any difficulty abord the ship. At 5:28 p.m. EST, men at Coast Guard stations and other radio dispatchers throughout the Great Lakes heard the Bradley's desperate "Mayday" distress call. "Mayday, Mayday, Mayday.' he shouted "Carl D. Bradley breaking in two and going down 12 miles southwest of Gull island." Fleming said something like "Any ships in the vicinity, please come."
